Rethaka (Pty) Ltd is a for-profit, woman-owned business, based in Rustenburg, South Africa. Rethaka is not a charity, but a purpose-driven business that does what is right, not what is easy. Through green innovations, they redefine societal problems into solutions, making it their business to uncover sustainable opportunities that create a far-reaching impact for low-income communities, with a particular focus on children and women. Rethaka produces repurpose school bags, which come fitted with a solar chargeable lamp to enable students to study into the night despite their home context.
To ensure the dignity of learners through an eco-friendly, durable and trendy schoolbag that enables them to extend their study time into hours after dark with a safe renewable energy light source, and ensures their safety and visibility of child pedestrians to motorists through the integration of retro-reflective material. A repurpose schoolbg is a child’s friend in learning, during long walks to school by day, and diligent study at night, helping them and the environment realise a more hopeful future.
Impact and Success Stories:
Rethaka has delivered Repurpose Schoolbags to hundreds of learners across South Africa. For example, on the fourth of September, the team was at Mphethuto Primary school handing over 300 Repurpose Schoolbags. The venture in on the road to sustainability, with increased interest from potential clients such as Vodacom and the Department of Basic Education openning up revenue opportunities. Partnership with the Rustenburg Local Municipality for operational support has also enabled team growth, which increases the potentail for impact.
In partnership with the Anzisha Prize, Rethaka (Pty) Ltd will be developing the corporate gifts for the Anzisha Awards Gala for 2015, at which the prize-winners will be announced from among the finalists. This will enable all participants to have the opportunity to bestow the gift on a needy child in their network who could benefit from access to a bag, additional study hours, and a safety mechanism on the long walk to school.
